You’d better get rid of the cat. For if the patients start believing that the cat can predict their death, the suggestion would indeed kill them. This is how Voodoo magic works. First you create a belief, then you use the belief in a suggestion, and - lo and behold! - the magic works! For example, if the people believe that a Voodoo-priest can make you ill telepathically, the only thing he has to do is let you know that he’s working on you. Once you know, you’ll get ill!

The cat curls up next to patients at the home in Providence, Rhode Island, in their final hours. According to the author of a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, the two-year-old cat has been observed to be correct in 25 cases so far.
According to the BBC-Internet report (posted on 26/7/07), ‘staff now alert the families of residents when the cat sits down next to their ailing loved one’. So instead of getting rid of the cat, the home’s staff are actively enforcing the suggestion! “He doesn’t make many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die”, David Dosa, a professor at Brown University who carried out the research, told the Associated Press news agency. The good professor doesn’t know what he is doing to his patients!
Cats often can sense when their owners are sick or when another animal is sick. They and other animals do have all kinds of premonitions. It is said that many animals had fled the disaster area before the Tsunami hit South East Asia a couple of years ago. A doctor who treats patients at the home said that she believed there was probably a biochemical explanation, rather than a psychic one. Well, yea, a proper scientist would say something like that. Science doesn’t believe in anything psychic, even if it stares them in the face. It makes you wonder whether the good doctors and scientists believe they themselves have a mind and can think. But this shortsightedness will have to be the topic of some other story. In the meantime: Get rid of the cat! There is no doubt many a ‘brujero’ would love to adopt it. But don’t give it to any of them!
